A guide to swivel sizes and breaking strains

Choosing the correct swivel size can seem unnecessarily confusing, particularly to those just starting out with fishing. Is size 8 bigger or smaller than size 1? What's the difference between size 1/0 and size 1?

This is a guide to what exactly the dimensions and breaking strains of various swivel sizes are. The sizes quoted are those available on this site although there are of course other sizes up to very large swivels for game fishing down to some very tiny swivels.

As you will see from the tables below, a size 2 barrel swivel for example, is larger in size than a size 2 rolling swivel if you ever buy barrel swivels online, don't buy rolling swivels in the same size and expect them to be comparable in length.

The tables below are standard "international sizes" which relate to all swivels on this site. However , just complicate things, certain brands have their own size specifications. Korda size 8 carp swivels are actually international size 4. So if you a looking for a swivel to fit safety clip systems, size 4 is what you need.
